Any Body outthere know how to get 'pipes' and stuff on a 64
with the modem and program that they sell?

I can't answer your question of how to get special characters with the program
Commodore sells, but they are available on the VT-52 terminal emulation pro-
gram. It is not public domain, but the author is letting net users have a free
copy. It allows you to do full screen stuff like vi, more, rogue, etc. If you
want a copy, send a disk along with a self addressed stamped mailer to:

You also need to set your account up properly. Put something like this in your
.cshrc file:
alias c64 "setenv TERMCAP /mntb/1/lawrie/miller/.c64;setenv TERM c64;set term = c64;stty -tabs"

Put this in file .c64:
#
# The following entry provides for destructive
# backspace for the "terminal5" software for c64,
# VT-52 type cursor motion, reverse scroll,
# and codes for use of the cursor control keys:
#
qc|c64|C64|Commodore 64:co#40:li#25:\
	:up=\EA:am:ho=\EH:\
	:nd=\EC:so=\EO:se=\EN:ce=\EK:\
        :cd=\EJ:sr=\EI:bc=\ED:\
        :cl=\EH\EJ:cm=\EY%+ %+ :\
        :ku=^B:kd=^P:kr=^T:kl=^E:

This is (absolutely positively) the last time I'm mentioning this program on
the net. "Side affects" of the notes take up too much time, e.g., the last
time I made this offer I got *several dozen* disks in the mail. Also, I just
joined into a scientific creationism discussion on net.misc. Research for
responses on that will no doubt take some time also.

By the way, we haven't gotten hardly any notes on net.* for several days now.
Is anyone else having the same problem?

The only way you can get the pipes, tilde and other useful things
like a break key, interrupt key, and cursor control is buy or make
a good terminal program. TERMCAPs and the stty command are only
cosmetic. They can not redefine the C64's character set.

I own a VIC20 and I'm looking over about 4 different terminal
programs and support TERCAPs. What I've seen will not be accept-
able for my use. So-----I'm in the process of writing my own.
A possible suggestion if you're going this route is to sit down
with your C64 and find out what the computer see's for each key
that is typed in. I have found out what some terminal programs
say and what actually is are two different things. Sit down
with the true ASCII codes and compare them to the C64's modified
ASCII.

                                       "Just a pluggin' away"
                                       Ed Kufeldt
                                       :~}

Uparrow works like a pipe on the C64 keyboard with the
terminal software that comes with your modem. Check the
index in the back of the Programmers Reference Guide and
compare the PETSCII with the ASCII table.
