[net.micro.cbm] Wanted: Advice on C64 Hardware Problem

bobl@teklds.UUCP (Bob Lewis) (01/14/84)

I'm not sure what I did, but my C64 refuses to power up. When I turn on the
power switch, the LED fails to come on and I detect only a slight change in
the appearance of the TV I'm using as a monitor. I've checked both power
and RF connections (and unplugged everything else). The internal fuse looks
good, and, in any case, this used to be an intermittent problem.

I'm getting neither video nor audio (checking the latter with a game
cartridge).

Has this happened to anyone else? Suggestions of other things to try would
be appreciated. In lieu of (or in addition to) those, recommendations
and/or flames about C64 repair places in the Portland (OR) area would also
be welcomed.

Thanks.

Sounds like the five volt regulator in the power
supply mid-cord has over-heated and hence shut down.
I know of two other machines of medium age that have
shown this problem. Get a LM309K five volt regulator
in a TO3 package and perform surjury on your power
supply. The regulator that is in there presently is
not a TO3 - it is something not commonly available.
It would probably do you good to try your machine with
a friend's power supply on your 64. Also, are you sure
you have plugged in the power supply with the proper
orientation into the 64? Some people I know have fried
a ROM or two by doing this.

As a suggestion, the only problem this could be is the
power is not up. Check the fuse with a meter. If the
fuse is OK, then check the transformer for output. If
both of those are OK, then the power supply is at fault.
This could be a bad regulator or a short on the supply
output somewhere.

P.S. I hope you have also checked the outlet that the
C64 is plugged into. My past experience tells me, this
problem is probably a bad fuse. I blew a fuse with a bad
cartridge.  Keep smiling and hang in there. :~}
