[net.micro.cbm] Double Quote Blues

Can anyone out there help me? I have a Vic which I use
     with a Protecto/Data 20 40/80 column board and a zenith monitor.
I have several terminal emulators but all seem to have one or
two bugs that drive me crazy.

The first problem occurs when I use the Victerm I and
login to the University's VAX. Whenever anything is printed to
the screen in double quotes I get each letter preceeded by the
     sequence <rev on><space><rev off><cursor left> which generally
would amount to nothing much except that it is in quote mode
and I get the corresponding graphic characters printed before
each letter. A simple message like ''Hello'' (I refuse to use the
     double quotes) appears as 'r R_Hr R_er R_lr R_lr R_or R_'. I
have gotten around this by not using the '' whenever possible,
but some messages from the VAX are in double quotes and it takes
     some time before I decypher them. I don't think it's a software
problem because in the 22 column mode there is no problem. If
you call 22 columns no problem.

The second bug is more irritating than the first. When I
use the Terminal-40 emulator (a software package) upper case
letters are preceeded by a pound sign. I think the corresponding
character on the VAX is tilde. On the VAX I can put up with it
since most script is lower case, save the banner and a few minor
options. But on the Cyber all commands and messages are echoed
in upper case. If you thought ''Hello'' was bad with Victerm,
you should see HELLO on the Cyber, LHLELLLLLO. L being a pound
     sign.

I know the most obvious answer is to chuck the whole lot,
but both have functions I use from time to time, and do not
appear on both. Actually, the program that gives me the least
amount of trouble came from Compute, emulator, download buffer,
printer/tape dump, and text search. You can even dump a basic
program from a mainframe and with little effort have it running
     on the Vic.

          Any suggestions?
