[net.micro.cbm] 80 column cartridge inquiry

lehman@crystal.ARPA (02/23/84)

I'm considering getting an 80 column cartridge for my 64. I already have
a monitor (amdek color 1 plus) so I'm ready. The question is, what is there?

I've seen some stuff in the magazines, but I haven't found it in any store.
Most retailers don't even plan to get them in the near future. I'm the sort
who would like to see an item before I buy it. I guess I'm out of luck in
that respect.

I'm hoping that some of you either have one, or have played with one enough
to be able to tell me a few things. Some of the questions I have in mind are:

1) Does it have to include hardware? I saw a program that converted the
VIC 20 to 40 columns (no mirrors, no hardware). Can the same be done for
the 64 to go to 80 columns?

2) What does the hardware do? I suppose it has to remap memory for the screen.
Does it change the video chip (as in, provide a different one)?

3) How does it work with the rest of the world - does it change the memory
map enough to require all new software? I've seen 80 column cartridges
advertised with word processors, does the cartridge work only with the
software provided, or can I write new stuff (like modify my current
terminal emulator) for it?

Please respond by mail - I'll summarize to the net.
