The Manhattan Transfer doing hard core R&B group harmony? On their latest (I assume) album for Atlantic they do a pretty nice job on; "Morse Code Of Love" (The Capris) "That's The Way It Goes" (The Harptones) "Unchained Melody" (Vito & The Salutations) Then they pull back one of the GREAT! little known, romantic, doo wop ballads of all from 1958, "Heart's Desire" (The Avalons). Again they do a nice job. Although their harmony isn't as sweet as the originals the feeling is there and their renditions aren't too bad. i.e. They won't make your teeth ache. They're to be commended not only for digging up some of these past treasures but also for dedicating each tune to the original group. I hope that this also means that Nick Santamaria (Capris), Raoul Cita (Harptones) and The Avalons will be looked up and paid some royalties. Or can things in the music business still be much the same as they were nearly thirty years ago? At any rate the name of the album is "Bop doo-wopp" Side one is the bop and side two is the doo-wop. A lot of the album was recored live in Tokyo in late 1983. If you are a group harmony enthusiast it's well worth checking out. William D. "keeping the sound alive"

That's the same group that did "Route 66", a wonderful change of pace from today's top 40.

In the light of the recent discographies of other groups or people, would someone post or mail me a Manhattan Transfer discography? Also, I am under the impression that at least one, if not more, of the four people making up Manhattan Transfer have changed since the group was formed. If someone could include details on that, if there were such changes, I'd appreciate it. Thanks much! I think it means that someone not the author recorded it, but I think there is more to it than just that. WM)

If you're a fan of the Count Basie song _Corner Pocket_ (cf. the Ellington and Basie collaboration on one of the Columbia labels), MT does a good job of it on the album _Extensions_. I have the new 'doo wop' album, and really enjoy it. I've been disappointed by their post-_Mecca for Moderns_ recordings, by and large, though. --Nick Cuccia --cuccia%ucbmiro@Berkeley --...!ucbvax!cuccia
