[net.micro.cbm] Need help with vip term for C64

schneids@ssc-vax.UUCP (Jim Schneidewind) (06/29/84)

H E L P ! ! ! !

I have a vip term program for my C64 and I can't download files

directly to the disk -- the d*mn thing just sits there doing nothing

with the red drive light on. Anyone else had this problem?? I can

download to the workspace fine, and then save that; however, I have

some large files (larger than the workspace) that I was trying to

download and it just doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

And since I'm on the subject: has anyone used the vip term at

1200 baud?? I get this feeling that it won't work at 1200 baud cuz

of the errors I get at 300 baud: while playing rogue, I usually have

to redraw the screen AT LEAST once for every level I'm on because of

garbage coming through!!

		Thanx,

I haven't tried downloading to disk, but I have noticed one other problem.
You are supposed to be able to specify what filetype you want the downloaded
file to be (according to the documentation). In fact, you don't seem to
get any choice -- the downloaded file is always type SEQ (kind of awkward
for BASIC programs).

As far as 1200 baud goes, you're right -- it doesn't work. I called SoftLaw
about this and they claim it's Commodore's fault. They are referring to the
now famous bug in the kernal routine that doesn't account for interupts
coming in and therefore gets the timing screwed up. Apparently, 300 baud
isn't so sensitive to this. I find this a little annoying since other people
have managed to get around the problem (e.g. Frank Prindle -- TermPlus).
I wish VIP would allow use of the 'optional baud rate' so we all could fiddle
with the timing, but nooooo!

It's really too bad, because in all other respects VIP Terminal is quite nice.
Great 80 column software display, good use of smart modems, programmable
function keys, etc, etc.
