[net.micro.cbm] New Commodore Drives

awinterb@udenva.UUCP (Art Winterbauer) (08/31/84)

Does anyone have any information on the new drives available for
the C64? I've heard a rumor that CBM has produced a successor
to the 1541.

I'm particularly interested in someone posting references to review
articles in any of the popular computing journals.

According to Commodore, the 1542 disk drive will have a better drive motor than
the 1541 and use an electronic rather than mechanical means of stopping the head
when it reaches the end of its throw (no more head-banging when you format a new
disk or run copy-protected software, so in theory less likelihood of the head
getting out of alignment).
Otherwise, aside from a different color case, the 1542 is supposed to be identical to the 1541. When asked whether the save-and-replace bug had been fixed, a Commodore engineer simply shrugged.
Another drive, I think the name is SFS 481, is supposed to run almost five times as fast as the 1541, but it will work only on the new Plus/4 computer.
