[net.micro.cbm] s. density or d. density?

notes@isucs1.UUCP (11/03/84)

It's been about a year since I have been involved in the Commodore scene.
I've been wondering if Commodore ever printed a corrected version of the
1541 manual. The first two said that the drive used SINGLE density floppies
even though it is a DOUBLE density system. I am certain that quite a few
problems were caused by that misleading specification. Anyone using single
density disks is bound to think their drive is out of alignment or is having
some other problem. This problem seems to be a carry-over from the 4040's
which had the same misleading information in their manuals. Commodore also
never made it very clear that the 8050 required QUAD density floppies in order
to operate reliably.

Also, does anyone know what tricks those crafty devils are up to these days?
Do they have any viable products planned, is their existence doomed or are
they on the horizon of great success? Is K-mart still their kind of shopping
place? What of their former president? Will there be a great battle of the
mass market systems between Atari and Commodore in the isles of K-mart?

"The more things change the more they stay the same"

I have used single sided single dinisity el cheapo diskettes (currently $.89)
for years. I always run them through Fast CHECKDISK (7 minutes) before using
them. I get about 1 failure in 20. I get no better results with expensive
diskettes.
