[net.micro.cbm] okimate 10 color printer

for the line eater

I am thinking of buying the two hundred dollar color
dot matrix printer. Has any one on the net any experience
with this peripheral? What are your comments?

Yes. I own one, and use it on the commodore.

The color and quality you will obtain are NOT what you would
think if you use the demonstration sheet as an example of what
	the OKIMATE can do.

Forget Text. It will be legible, but not suitable for anyone's
viewing but your own. Really, I have returned one because I thought
that it was bad, it prints so lightly. It just turned out that
this is the way they work.

Also, I was under the impression that I might be able to use
normal paper. NO WAY. The only paper that you can use is the
stuff OKIMATE sells themselves. (This is not to say that you
can't use thermal paper for black and white, but I haven't tried
that). OKIMATE sells paper at 9.50 per 250 sheets....

Ribbons do not last very long, and this OKIMATE will turn out to
cost you more than you may have thought in the long run.

The paper feed mechanism often ruins the sensitive paper when
you are trying to load in a new sheet, or the starting sheet.

	Summation:
We do not use the OKIMATE very much.
There seem to be two models, one loud and one quiet.
Color is ok, but not quite what is advertised.
It is inexpensive, but take into consideration paper
		and ribbons.

It is a neat novelty, but you get what you pay for.

	I like my okimate 10.

I use the okimate for printouts sometimes, using Xerox
paper or pretty smooth fanfold. The print isn't great,
but it beats the thermal printer I used to have.

Compared to the 1525, it is very light print.
I returned a 1525 once, after suffering through a sound
slightly worse than a dentist drill. I just couldn't take it.
	The Oki is very quiet.

The graphics mode is quite good, except for a one pixel white
line every eight graphics lines. The color mode does burn up
ribbon, but for my uses (generally less than a full screen)
it comes out about the price of color Xeroxing.

My favorite use for it is printing directly onto acetate for
producing color overhead slides, which I use in presentations.
It prints better on Acetate than it does on paper.

Well, I can say one thing, it sure eats a LOT of ribbon in
the process of printing!

The colors are in sequence, not parallel, so each line has
to spin through all of the color segments, whether they are
used or not. Just watch one work sometime.
