I recently purchased a CARDCO CSD1 disk drive which was purported to be 100%
1541 compatible. The first day, it seemed to work fine, although I didn't
try to load any commercial software with special protections. The second day,
it would no longer format disks, although it would still read and write to
the disks that I had formatted the first day. When I took it back to the
store where I had purchased it, the assistant manager informed me that they
had been having a large number of returns of CSD1's which would not load
software with 1541 dependent protection schemes.
I wish I had more information to pass on, but I only had the unit two days.
For those considering purchasing this unit, be cautious.
BTW, it only sold for $20 less than the 1541. I now have a 1541
