There have been alot of rumors lately about Commodore turning over the repair of it's hardware to RCA. Well, it's happened....sort of. My disk drive went south last weekend, so this morning I called Commodore's service number to see if they still do the $69 unit swap. The friendly lady at the other end of my phone stated that they no longer swap, and that I would have to take it to a local repair facility. I then inquired about where said service centers were in my locale. She gave me the names & #s of about a dozen places, all within an hour's drive from my house. Not all of the names given were RCA. In fact, most of them were 'independent' repair shops. She encouraged me to shop around, as not all places charged the same. I am glad she said to shop around, as the pirces varied widely. The most expensive was RCA which wanted a whopping $150.00 to fix ANY logic problems (as opposed to allignments and power supplies). Heck, for that price, I could almost get a new drive! The best price was from a little hole in the wall fix-it shop, that wants $30 plus the price of the parts, and this includes an allignment! Sounds too good to be true, so I will check the place out a little bit before committing my precious drive to their hands. So, if you need service, call Commodore (800-247-9000) and ask them for the numbers of ALL of the service centers in your area. Then shop around. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Lowrey "To vacillate or not to vacillate, that is the question.... ....or is it?" ...!(<sun,cbosgd,ihnp4}!amdahl!dwl10 [ The opinions expressed <may> be those of the author and not necessarily those of his most eminent employer. ]
