[net.micro.cbm] 1571/1541 CP/M Compatibility questions & 128 SDR questions

rodney@gt-oscar.UUCP (RODNAY RICKS) (11/17/85)

OK 1571 owners, time to speak up. I am thinking about buying a 128
(I like hodge-podges :-) ) and I would like to know a few things first.
First of all, how compatible is the 1571 & 64 mode with the actual 64?
I will assume that all non-protected programs run on it (please correct me
if I'm wrong), but how many copy-protected programs work? Could it be that
(gasp) ALL of the copy protected programs work? Also, what are the effects
of software speedup utilities on the drive? Good, bad, none?
Does the 1571/128 combination use the serial data registers for the disk
drives? If so, I have calculated (again, correct me if I'm wrong) that a
data transfer rate of aproximately 15k/second can be done at 1 MHz, 30k or so
at 2 MHz (this done not include such things as seek time, rotational
latentcy, etc.) This would require shutting up the VIC II chip, and masking
out other IRQ's (such as keyboard). My biggest question on this issue is...
Do the Serial Data Registers work??? I haven't been able to find out for
sure with my 64, but I do have a friend with one. Hmmm... (anyone want to
talk networking? Or has all of this been discussed LONG ago?).
Finally, how compatible is the 128's CP/M mode with the Kaypro and
Osborne machines? How could I get a list of programs that are known to work
on it? Also, how accesable are the I/O chips in CP/M (including the 6526)?

                                        Thanks for listening,
                                           Rodney
