[net.micro.cbm] expansion port question

kwf@ncsu.UUCP (01/08/86)

I use the FAST LOAD cart. by EPXY (and recommend is highly) on my c64. It
works well, however, it must be removed for some software packages to run.
I want to install a switch on my c64 which will allow me to prevent the
auto-start of a cart. (like FAST LOAD). I hope this will reduce the strain on
the expansion port connector.

My question is this: Does anyone know how the c64 determines whether an
auto-start cart. is in the expansion port?

I suspect that it simply checks the GAME and/or EXROM lines. If so, I should
be able to install a switch that will ground these lines, making the auto-start
cart. invisible to the c64.

If anyone knows, please reply by mail.

thanks in advance.

The 64 determines whether you have an auto-boot rom by looking at location
$8000 at powerup. (see page 263 of the programmer's reference guide). To
eliminate the auto boot, you just have to prevent the kernal from accessing
rom at powerup. this can be done by placing a normally-closed pushbutton
in series with the power lead to the cartridge and hold it down during
power-up or cold boots. If you don't press the button, the 64 will boot
from the cartridge. If you are not a hardare hacker, most expansion boards
come with this switch installed.

You don't need to remove the cartridge to disable FAST LOAD. When you
power up, type the british pound sign, then return. This will put you
in the FAST LOAD menu. Then type a D (for disable). This will re-boot
the 64, but the FAST LOAD stuff is gone.

Cardco makes a bus extender that lets you plug in a few cartridges at once.
There are switches on it to enable any cart you want. It costs a few $$,
but works fine.

I have reverse engineered the FastLoad cartridge and can give details of
how it works (if I get enough E-Mail requests, I will post a bunch of
details).
