My thanks to Fred of U of Waterloo, Ontario, and jmw of UC San Diego, for pointing out the silly error I made in my code to direct listing output to the printer. CHKOUT requires the logical file number, not the device number, in X. It's the sort of error one can spend hours poring over and not see!
