[net.micro.cbm] Turbotape for datasette/C64

bub@rlgvax.UUCP ( Mongo Mauler) (02/25/86)

In response to some requests for info on speed loaders for the datasette
recorder for the C64, I intended to find the back issue of COMPUTE!'S
GAZETTE that included both TURBOTAPE and TURBODISK. I was alas unable to
find my issue with both! I do however have the first publication of
TURBOTAPE: the January 1985 issue of COMPUTE! (not the GAZETTE) magazine.

This same issue also includes 2 games for the 64, as well as a very useul
'Guitar Tuner' for guitarists (can also easily be modified for other
stringed instruments).

The claims in the article accompanying TURBOTAPE are pretty much accurate!
Here's some food for thought:

Stores itself out of the way of BASIC.

Can be safely used w/Simon's Basic, Supermon, PAL, etc.

Handles programs up to 49k in length.

Save, load, or verify data from any part of RAM.

Normal load command will TURBOLOAD a program that has been
previously TURBOSAVED (so you don't have to reload the utility!).

	1541 12k program load time: 34 seconds
Turboload of same program: ~28 seconds

Saving same program on 1541: 40 seconds
	Turbosave time: 42 seconds

All in all, a very useful and inexpensive utility. If you take the time
to enter the quite lengthy code yourself, total cash cost would be only
the $4.00 back issue (plus tax) cost of the magazine. I myself was too
lazy, so I purchased the diskette (not from this mag, which also costs
$12.95) that included both the TURBOLOADERS (for disk and tape) utilities.
Sorry I can't find it! Anyway to get a back issue from COMPUTE!

I've also recently been made aware of a Tape speed loader called NOVALOAD.
Any 64/vic users out there heard of it or used it?

I hope the faithful among the datasetters out there in netland find this
posting useful. Keep that little thing chugging!
