*** REPLACE THIS *** I have a one of the old Commodore 64/vic20 modems (the VICMODEM 1600 I think). It requires that you have a "standard telephone" with a removable handset. The problem is that I don't have a standard telephone. Does anyone out there know of a way to hook use the VICMODEM with a nonstandard telephone? Please. I need help. I have a C64, a RS232 interface made by Jim-pack, a Null Modem, Concord 2400 Baud modem, and VIP terminal software. However, I can not get it to work properly. I can login, and the computer seems to accept commands. However, the information that is sent to me from the computer appears as garbage on my screen. Thanks in advance. {decvax,ucbvax,ihnp4}!trwrb!trwrba!gibson

With all this talk about modems going around, I thought I'd add my two cents. I bought a 1650 compatable with a package called Total Telecom- munications a while back for $40. I saw it last week in one magazine or another for only $30. It's not Hayes compatible, but if you get a good software package, or are good enough to write your own software for it, It can be quite good. I've had mine auto-redialing, auto-answering and all the things the Hayes' can do. Of course, the Hayes is easier to use, but if your on any kind of buget and don't mind a little work (if you want to call it that) this might not be such a bad deal. You have to make sure your modem is set up to recieve the same transmition format that the other is sending. Things to check are word-length, parity type, duplex, etc. I had the same problem when calling my schools mainframe, until I found out it was set to 7 bit words and even parity. Good luck... Try using your terminal program to reset the parity on the communications line. This is the most probable problem with the symtoms you have described. Daniel Lawrence

I have heard of some terminal programs that barely work at 2400 but these have seriously modified the interrupt routines. I think the newest Punter BBS S/W has this. Another alternative is a more conventional terminal program such as Common Sense (comes free with 1660 and 1670 modems). These programs can adjust the "Baud Rate Factor". I haven't tried this myself, but it might work. 1200 is already pushing the limit. 2400 is nearly hopeless. There is no substitute for a REAL hardware UART!
