[net.micro.cbm] C compiler for C64

wbell@utcs.UUCP (Warren Bell) (12/06/84)

According to a friend who went to the recent 'World of Commodore' show
here in Toronto, Pro Line Software (of Chicago) has developed a C compiler
for the 64 and is close to releasing it.

The cost was reported to be between $50 and $100 (US, I suppose)

does anyone know anything more about this product?

thanx

Pro-Line is not out of Chicago, they are out of Mississauga, which I
figured somebody from Toronto would know!

I haven't seen the C compiler yet, but will be getting it shortly.

The above number isn't correct. I called it and got the U.S. Dept of Energy!
Try *416*273-6350.

I talked to someone at Pro-Line who claimed that they'll have a c compiler
out in Jan. 1985. It supposedly will be a full C implementation
including the associated library routines. And they anticipate selling
it for around $100 canadian dollars. (in U.S. currency it'd be less).
That's all there's to tell so far.

For those of you who have been waiting for MANX (Aztec C) to come out with a
C Compiler with the C64 as a host development system, forget it.
(in spite of what their ads may appear to tell you).
Altho they had intended on developing such a creature, they claim that
the slow/disk-bound nature of the c64 makes the compiler unacceptable
for development use and that the reputation of their compilers for
other machines might suffer if they released it. They recommend using one
of their cross-compilers for the c64 instead.

The latest catalog from Abacus Software says they'll have a C compiler out
in January. That is all the information I have on this. Has anyone out there
used anything from Abacus? They have a $40 Pascal compiler that sounds
pretty good. Has anyone bought or at least played with it?

Just because something is obvious doesn't mean that it's true.

I got the same story from the MANX people. The only problem with their cross-
compilers is that the cheapest one costs $750. They say that is because you
really get two compilers. One for the host and one for the target. I sure
would rather they did not give you the host compiler and charged closer to the
$200 they do for their native mode compilers.

I am very interested in buying C-Power (Proline). From
discussions on the network it is a good C compiler and
i would like to try it. Could someone give me the address
and phone no of Proline and if you know the price.
