Actually, the compiler does not use save with replace, but both the
editor and linker do.  In any case I thought the save-with-replace
debate was resolved some time ago: as long as you specify a drive
number you shouldn't have any problems. All of my programs do it this
way, and in three years of heavy usage I have not had any disk errors
with any clear connection to the use of SWR. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe
only some versions of the 1541 have the bug while mine is ok, but I
tend to doubt it.

Nope, all the 1541 ROMs have this bug.  Using the 0: always eliminates 
the problem, at least as far as I've heard; the bug is directly related
to attempted buffer allocation for a second drive (1:) when none is
specified.  This is due, of course, to the ancestery of the 1541 ROM
code in the 4040 drive which had more RAM and a second drive.
