[net.rec.nude] Quality Recreation

kfk@ccieng2.UUCP (08/12/83)

I wish to voice my support for nude recreation as well. I have only
been participating in such activities for a couple of years now, but
I am a confirmed convert. (I've also only recently become connected
to the usenet, which is why I've never posted anything here before.)
I have found that the advantages of wearing no clothes over wearing
clothes are significant enough that I just don't like to have any-
thing on my body now that isn't really necessary. In particular, I
have clothes on in my own home rather seldom; after all, it's my
private residence, and I can do what I like therein. For those who
object to such things, especially since I live in a ground-floor
apartment: yes, I generally keep the curtains drawn (most of the
way, in the evening), but I'm not fanatic about that, either.

I have several reasons why I like to go nude. The most important
one is that it's just plain comfortable. You can take off your
clothes, sit down, or swim, and it's really pleasant to your body.
Grass feels good on one's derriere, and it's hard to beat the
sensation of a warm breeze going over your whole body. Also,
as Pete admitted ("admitted?" maybe "declared" would be better),
it's pleasant to watch the ladies there. There is one extremely
significant point to be made here, though: our society has, as a
rule, forgotten that sex is distinct from nudity. I have very
few sexual thoughts when I'm at such a place. As I watch someone
go by, I think, "That's a *good* figure. Wonder how she keeps fit?"
There is the friendliness aspect of nude recreation, though I must
say that I don't contribute all that much; but it's nice to watch
people talking civilly with each other, instead of groaning about
the rude people all around them. One interesting point is that,
generally, there seem to be few people blasting their ministereos.

I first began nude recreation when I was living in Boulder, CO, where
there's a place called Coot Lake. Frankly, Coot Lake is a little
tiny lake (really a large pond), and its water is known for being
less than clean, but I didn't swim that much there. It was better
for just sitting around and reading, snoozing, talking, or whatever.
But that was the first place I found where I could go around *com-
fortably* without any clothes. One of my favorite things to do at
the time was to go on a bike ride for a couple of hours, and then
come back to Coot Lake, strip down, and relax for half an hour.
What a pleasant way to cool down after a long ride!

For those near Boulder who want to know where Coot Lake is: Take
the Longmont Diagonal northeast out of Boulder, to 63rd Street and
turn left (due north, and it's *before* the railroad tracks). Head
up 63rd about 3/4 mile, and it'll be on your left immediately behind
the IBM plant on the right. You really can't miss it, because the
lake itself is only about 25 yards from the road. Yes, those driving
by can see those at the lake from their cars as they go by, but that
doesn't bother the people at the lake one bit.

I have a problem with my new residence, though: I live in
Rochester, NY these days, and I simply can't find any place that's
close enough for me. I don't like to make a big production to get
to a place where I can go nude, so I don't want an hour's drive
to get where I'm going. This conflicts with the fact that the
closest place of which I'm aware is in Geneseo, which is quite a
bit south of here. Does anyone out there in net.land know of a
place where I can go to be nude and comfortable near Rochester?
Have I just missed some obvious spot at Lake Ontario?

I suppose that it might be of somewhat general interest anyway.
The original article asked for nude recreation sites in the
Rochester, NY area.

Places to look for nude recreation: A good place to start is with
Lee Baxandall's "World Guide to Nude Beaches & Recreation." The second
place to consult is the Naturists (the organization Lee Baxandall is
head of). A subscription to their magazine "Clothed with the Sun" is
helpful. Referring to my World Guide for the Rochester area, I'll give
you names of all of the "Upstate New York" listings since I'm not
familiar enough with New York to know where things are. Ask me for
specific directions if any of them sound like what you want.
New Paltz: Minnewaska. Binghamton: Empire Lake. Ithaca: Six Mile Creek.
Watertown: Southwick Beach State Park. Zoar Valley Shale Beach.
Geneseo: Triphammer Pond. Westfield: Chautauqua Gorge.
Maybe the best contact I can give is a private group listed in the
Guide: "Naturist Rochester gathers several nights a week off-season
at Morley Schloss's basement. Pool, whirlpool, sauna. In warm
weather at private Steph's Pond. New-comers phone for invite.
   237 Vassar St., Rochester, NY 14607. (716)244-1219."
     Good luck,

Forget about Coot Lake. Our local Boulder officials decided to
crack down on it. Nudity is no longer allowed there.
