This is an update to an article I posted several weeks ago about the
Elysium Institute's current struggle for survival. As I understand the
situation, this is how things stand now:
Elysium is still operating and has filed suit in Santa Monica Superior
Court against the L.A. County Board of Supervisors decision to close it
down.
Most of the flak seems to be coming from a small but vocal minority of
Topanga Canyon residents, many of whom moved there long after Elysium was
established. One of these residents has driven steel pipes into the ground
along the access road to prevent Elysium from widening it as required by
the Planning Commission (ultimately a futile gesture, but it shows how the
complainers think and operate).
Elysium is now planning a "clothing required" day, tentatively set for 20
April, so that all Topanga Canyon residents can come and look the place
over.
The fight is far from over, but it is heating up. For further information
