[net.rec.nude] Nude Olympics

kaufman@uiucdcs.UUCP (01/25/85)

I recently caught a glimpse of the end of an item on NBC news, pertaining
to the "Nude Olympics" held in, I believe, W. Laffayette, Indiana. Does
anyone, perhaps from Purdue, have any details on the event which, I understand,
is becoming an annual happening? Post to the net - it's probably of general
interest here.

Yes, it's true ... the Nude Olympics occurs every winter
(usually in the Spring <hahaha> semester) at a men's dormitory <Cary
Quad, for those alumni reading> ....

Ok, well it actually happens *outside* the men's dorm. You
see, it is staged on the "coldest day of the year." It's an excuse
for approximately one hundred college men <and some women, too> to
shed their clothes, have their attitudes adjusted :-) and run for an hour
or two in sub-zero weather ...

The event attracts a number of spectators, both male and female,
who are there primarily for the show ... On the whole, it's a lot of fun,
but I wouldn't exactly call it a "naturist activity."

My favorite part of this was when I arrived at Purdue last
January ... I was assigned to Cary Quad and had a room on the first
floor South-west ... which meant I had a nice warm place to watch from.
I was absolutely bewildered ... "Nude olympics ... they said the Midwest
was weird, but I had *no* idea ..." I got over it, though...

If you've any more questions, write to me; I'll try to answer
them.

But, being a Purdue student, I couldn't help but reply to the
reference to my school. Yes, Purdue University does indeed have
a "Nude Olympics" each year. It is an unofficial event. (of
course) It is held at the Cary Quadrangle all-guys dorm, on a
night selected by the vice-president of the dorm as suitably cold
and unpleasant. Generally one of the two or three coldest nights of
the year. This year it was around 5 F, they do try to keep it from
being too dangerous. These days there are 100 to 300 runners in
the race, of which three to eight are female. "Officially", the
winner is the one to run the farthest time. This year's winner
lasted about 1 hour, 15 minutes, I think.

The race is started at midnight by a group of runners bearing the
official torch, a flaming roll of toilet paper. The runners then
follow them. The race is made more challenging by some spectators
who throw trash cans of water onto the track and the runners.

Attire allowed: shoes, socks, gloves, hats, and masks. Some people
use vaseline, but most just use grain alcohol. (applied internally,
NOT externally) There are generally crowds estimated at between
1000 and 5000 there for the event, although most get too cold and
leave before it's over.

Although running is the official event, there is the occaisional
bicyclist (with the headlight pointed strategically backwards),
skateboarder, and rollerskater, although skates have trouble when
the ice builds up in the turns.

A roommate of mine was in it once. Someone hid his clothes while he
was running, so when he finaly quit, because he was getting too cold,
he found that he had to run half a mile back across campus to the
dorm where we lived. ( a coed dorm ) He was red as a beet all over
when he finally got back.

The police just let it happen, as long as it stays within the confines
of the courtyard of the dormitory.

Guess that's about it, let me know if anyone has any more questions.

Yes, the Nude Olympics are a real event in West Lafayette. Purdue's Cary
Quad dorm is the (un)official sponser, and the race is held on the oval
sidewalk inside the Quad. It is supposed to be held on the coldest night of
the year, and on a weeknight to boot. It starts at midnight with a group of
runners carrying torches while some of the band members play the Olympic
theme song. It lasts until the last runner quits and takes a solo 'victory'
lap.

My freshman year, a friend of mine ran for ~20 miles in almost three hours to
finish in second place. I think he was crazy. About 350 men run and there
is usually only 1 female runner; about 2 or 3 thousand spectators line the
oval(1/5mile) standing 5 deep on both sides of the track. Usually the vast
majority of the runners give it up after a half hour or so... it's usually
about 10 degrees or so, and when the spectators leave, the winds gets to the
runners.

RE: the "Nude Olympics"

"becoming" an annual event, nothing! It's *been* an annual event
for many years now. Yes, it's a Purdue thing, I don't remember exactly
which group of crazies put it on. (Like, there's so *many* groups
of crazies there, it's hard to keep them all straight!)

If you know *anything* about the type of weather Prude U gets this
time of year, and about wind-chill, and frostbite, and hypothermia,
you'll know why certain beagles declined to get involved.

Don't the local police have anything to say about these "nude olympics"???
I'm surprised no one has mentioned any arrests, etc...
They usually spoil this kind of thing.

Most local police departments stay off of University campuses unless
actually persuing or trying to locate someone. Even then they usually
pay a courtesy call on the Campus cops as well. Campus Cops are frequently
more lenient to these sorts of things (which is one great feature of
college life).

I thought they were held in the midwest...not California where
the average person has voted for Reagan 3 or 4 times
and not on the east coast where cops hassle people....

According to a Vancouver paper, cold weather forced the cancellation of
Purdue's Nude Olympics in Lafayette. Does anyone have any details?

Cold weather was hardly the issue; the event has traditionally been
held on what is expected to be the coldest night.

Rather, the event got cancelled when a task force that had been created
by the University president to end the event recommended (surprise) that
the event be cancelled. It's never really been clear why this
all got stirred up; it has never been sponsored in any way by the
University (word just spreads across campus the night it's going to
happen) but two Resident Assistants lost their jobs last year because
they were recognized while participating.

Purdue is on a serious "limit the freedoms of students" bent this year,
so this was no big surprise. It might still happen -- at the moment
the weather is in the 50s, so it'll have to be a bit colder first.

Cheers,
chris

I was really looking forward to this year's outcome. A damn shame...
