I agree the "brewer's yeast" is at best an old wive's tale. I have two Samoyeds that go to a lot of dog shows -- where they can be exposed to ALL kinds of pests. We used to have a ritual of dusting, spraying, etc with flea poweders as soon as we got home. Instead of all that we now have an ultra-SONIC bug shoo'er in the house. The idea is that bugs are distressed by the super high sound wave and become dis-functional. I had seen articles/ads on these devices and asked my vet about them. He agreed that they were useful. When I called to order one, I asked the order-person how many I would need for my multi-room house. She told me that if they were ordinary walls that one for the whole house would be sufficient, since the sould would echo/penetrate thru the whole house. --I found this quite surprising! I mean she could have sold me a few units, but instead told me to get JUST one. (How refreshing!) We've had our unit running since late summer and the dogs continue to be flea-free. An nice side effect is that the whole house is very bug free now. We used to be plagued with a lot of spiders. Since we got the unit I've only seen two. (they are bound to blow in) I highly recommend these ultra sonic devices to any one with a pet of any kind (except rodent pets -- it will try to shoo them out of the house too!)
