my dog has developed the annoying habit(?) of chewing on her paws. i've asked several vets about it, most of them give me cortisone(sp?) pills or some such stuff to reduce her chewing. some have suggested she has an allergy - others indicate it might be a nervous condition. anyone have any similar experience - i'd like to avoid expensive allergy tests and our do-it- yourself tests proved nothing. any possible solutions or other ideas to help determine the cause would be appreciated. thanks. rona kopp abi-lincroft hogpc!bogie

On dogs who chew their feet. Our dog (male poodle, 6 years old) used to chew his front feet. Our vet told us he was bored. We tossed a pillow at him (which he seems to like) every time we caught him at it. This distracted him, and he'd stop. Eventually (over a couple of months) he stopped chewing his feet, and took to dragging pillows around the house! We gave him a pillow of his own, and he now chews that. Not too expensive, and so far, non-destructive. -Dave Levenson -ABI Holmdel
