#N:hp-kirk:17400002:000:391 hp-kirk!daves Aug 17 08:45:00 1983 Last Monday I became the proud father of a 10 week old baby hand fed Sun Conure. I am interested in any information/suggestions/pointers/etc in regards to the care of sun conures in particular and conures in general. Please respond by unix mail. Thanks in advance. Pray tell, for this ignorant barbarian and anybody else too afraid to speak up, what a "Sun Conure" is?

#R:hp-kirk:17400002:hp-kirk:17400003:000:1466 hp-kirk!daves Aug 22 08:56:00 1983 For those of you out there who are wondering just what a sun conure is I will give you most of what I know about them. A sun conure is a member of the conure family, which is a member of the parrot family. They are smallish birds (about the size of your fist, but not as fat). They have a very striking appearance. Right now our bird still has his first set of feathers. His wings are mainly green with some yellow on the tips. His head is orange and yellow, as is his body. There is some blue in the wing tips and tail. After the first molt, most of the green will go away and be replaced by more yellow. I have been using the term 'he' in a general context, as both sexes of sun conures look the same (unlike most birds where the male looks prettier than the female) and the sexes have to be determined surgically with an optical fiber microscope. As this is a rather traumatic experience for the bird, and as we are not planning on mating it, the gender is not very important. According to what the breeder told us, sun conures are native to French Guiana and were once on the endangered species list. Our bird however is at least a second generation American. They live to be 25/35/55 years old (according to whom you are talking). Well, that is about all that I know about them. If any one out there has any tips/advice/warnings/suggestions/etc on raising one, I would like to hear (via unix mail). Dave Serisky ....[hp-labs|hp-pcd]!hp-cvd!daves
