I purchased a Boxer for the following reasons (which match favorably with the reasons the Golden Retriever was being considered): 1. The Boxer is sturdy, but not large. He can take the abuse of an over zealous child, without complaint. 2. He is protective, but is not likely to bite a visitor. 3. He is noisey when something strange is seen or heard, but is quiet when ordinary, everyday events are happen. (Nice on the nerves.) 4. He loves to play and has great stamina. He outlasts our kids. 5. He has short hair, sheds very little, and is clean. This is one of the few dogs that does not aggrevate my wife's allergies. 6. One of the nice things about a Boxer is that he looks mean and that alone will deter many burgulars. The fact is he is gentle (I have never had a biting incident with one of my Boxers, but a few threats have happened). 7. Last, but not least, he is easily trained, even though he has never been to "official" obedience school. All in all, I love Boxers and they get my highest recommendation as a family dog. They are not hunting dogs, however, and must be trained to retrieve, if your kids like to play "go fetch" with the dog.
