[net.pets] cats not using the litter box

mmr@wuphys.UUCP (Martha Minton Reiner) (11/23/83)

HELP! I have two domestic cats and have a MAJOR problem: one of my
two cats (I don't know which one but I have a suspicion) doesn't use
the litter box to urinate. She'll use the corners of the rooms,
the hallway, under the sinks, and on electrical cords & tools "to go".
What am I to do? I have scolded her, put her in her litter box
(which is in the closet) for an hour, and lavished much affection
on her--all to no avail. She has been doing this for about six months now.
Does anyone have any problems like this?
Any answers? We have just (2 months ago) moved into to a new
house but my other female cat and my female dog are fine.
This "problem" cat seems fine and normal in every way except this.
I even tried that spray on the market: "Dog Away" but that just stinks up
the house.

Any response would be appreciated.

I once knew a guy who had a cat who wouldn't use the litter box. Just before
the cat stopped using the litter box, my friend switched to a new brand of
litter (I believe it was litter green, but I'm not positive since it was a
few years ago). This may or may not be your probleem, but it's something to
think about.

I have two male cats, and one started hanging OVER the side of the box
when urinating. I asked the vet about it, and she said it could be a
territorial thing. She suggested getting another litter box so each could
have one. I have a friend who did this with her two cats and it worked.
Try another litter box placed away from the first, and introduce the suspect
cat to it. Otherwise, I'd suggest consulting your vet.
