The cat sniffed the tree very cautiously, walked around it a couple of times, prodded at an ornament or two, and gradually grew somewhat bolder and more aggresive. She soon was madly playing with the ornaments, succeeded in knocking one down, batted it around the room for a little while and then took off in a mad dash straight at the tree. She ran right up the thing to about three feet from the top and despite the mess and emotional trauma for the cat, I must have laughed uncontrolably for 5 minutes at the sight of tree slowly falling over with the cat clinging to the upper branches. We now use a more sturdy base and we also cover the water pan, but I still find the combination of a cat and Xmas tree to be one of the more enjoyable aspects of Christmas.
