Before arranging to have a large dog in an apartment, please consider what it will be like for the dog and for your neighbors. Unless you have a well-formulated plan (and the discipline to carry it out) to give the dog plenty of running and exercise-- Unless you have a practical way to keep the dog from fouling the grounds and lawn around the apartment-- Unless you are able to train the dog to be quiet and not be constantly barking--- Then please do yourself, the dog, and your neighbors a favor and rent a house with a fenced-in yard.

My wife and I were living in an apartment when we got a small terrier. Believe it or not, she did not bark, and furthermore we succeeded in making an arrangement with the manager to use a small patch of ground on condition I turn it over periodically. We lasted about six months under this arrangement. Our conclusion was that it is impossible to perperly care for a dog (no matter how small) when living in an apartment. We wound up renting a small house with fenced yard, and have never regretted it. -Joe P.
