What's the best age to have a female cat neutered??? I have a 8 month old kitten and am getting worried about a male hanging around outside. Thanks in advance.

First: Male cats are neutered females are spayed. Second: 8 months is a mature cat not a kitten. A healthy cat can be spayed at 8 to 10 months. -- Jim Livingston, Perkin-Elmer Data Systems Group - Santa Clara, Calif. UUCP: ..!hplabs!pesnta!jiml

Re My previous reply to mkd@utastro.UUCP Sorry, I have to correct my answer to 8 to 10 weeks, not months. From: Jim Livingston (New on the net) -- Jim Livingston, Perkin-Elmer Data Systems Group - Santa Clara, Calif. UUCP: ..!hplabs!pesnta!jiml

In reference to neutering/spaying a cat at 8 - 10 weeks: Ask your vet, he/she will be doing it anyway, and will most likely know when is the best time. There have been a lot of medical questions lately concerning pets. It seems that your vet is always the best source of information. If you don't agree with your vet, get another's advice. Since there are probably few vets on the net, this isn't really a good place for advice. Joey Duhon ihnp4!ihlpm!duhon

<> I'm not sure what Jim Livingston meant - first saying that 8-10 months is mature for a cat, then that he meant 8-10 weeks. 8-10 weeks is a very young kitten. Kittens are typically weaned at around 6 weeks. For show purposes (just one indicator), kittens younger than 4 months are not even allowed in a show hall (health reasons, both for kittens and other cats there). From 4-8 months cats are showable as kittens; beyond 8 months they are adult cats. Proper age for neutering/spaying varies but is typically in the 6-8 month range. Maturity of the cat is the important factor, and some cats just mature faster than others. -- ...Relax...don't worry...have a homebrew. Dick Dunn {hao, ucbvax, allegra}!nbires!rcd (303) 444-5710 x3086

<> I already posted one reply on the subject, but please: >In reference to neutering/spaying a cat at 8 - 10 weeks: > >Ask your vet, he/she will be doing it anyway, and will most likely >know when is the best time. NO CAT IS READY FOR NEUTERING OR SPAYING AT 10 WEEKS. This is absolutely, totally wrong. The number should be months - it may be six months, but that's more like 26 weeks. If you find any vet who is stupid enough to spay or neuter a 10-week old kitten, report him to the SPCA. -- ...Relax...don't worry...have a homebrew.
