Do not collar cats. Cats don't like collars. All cats I have known enjoy getting into and out of tight places and generally do all manor of activity that could snag or catch a collar. Also some cats will scrape their skin right off trying to get rid of the collar. Larry Welsch houxu!welsch

Our cats don't seem to mind wearing collars, but I have one heck of a time getting all their fleas to wear them. <:-) ___________________________________________________________ KEITH F PILOTTI -- UC SanDiego Cognitive Science Laboratory ...{philabs,ucbvax}!sdcsvax!sdcsla!pilotti (UUCP) pilotti@NPRDC (ARPA)

my cousin keeps her cat in a harness. The cat doesn't seem to mind the harness and wears it all the time. When caught in something, however, the cat knows how to remove it (she keeps it loose enough for him to get out). this cat is an indoors cat, but goes out on leashes. audrey ishizaki HPlabs Palo Alto, CA 415-857-5903

It is not true that all cats dislike collars. Some do, some don't. However, any cat with a collar should wear a collar that can expand if it gets caught while the cat is being cat-like, e.g. climbing a tree, crawling around in a small space, etc. There are leather collars available with a piece of elastic sewn in just for this purpose. One of my cat books suggests this for an ID for a cat: an collar made out of regular white elastic, sewn together to form a circle. Write the appropriate info with permanent ink on the collar. It may not be as annoying as a regular collar and tags to cats who don't like collars. Here in Multnomah County, Oregon, cats are required to be licensed. I don't know if they have to wear the tag the county sends out (my cat always did). -- A. Jacko, Tektronix

<do we still need this line?> I'm sure some people have had the problem of their cat(s) kicking or otherwise removing identification collars placed around their necks. Is there some alternative to using a collar? I had thought of some kind of dye on the neck fur but what to use that won't bother the cat if it ingests it? Mark Becker bnl!mbeck
