I have noticed on several occasions that some birds that live along side of local streets will fly directly in front of moving automobiles at rather low altitudes. Usually, the birds begin their flight from a tree a few moments before the car passes by. The birds do not appear to simply be traveling to the other side of the road, as they often begin their ascent after they have passed the car. Is this some sort of fake-attack by the birds to frighten off intruders in their territory? Perhaps it is some sort of "game" the birds play to see how close they can fly to the speeding vehicles without getting hit. Of course, another possibilty is that the birds cannot judge the speed of oncomming traffic and simply dash out without caution. Any ideas? -- Harlan B. Braude {most "backbone" sites}!houxt!hbb
