I don't know anything about American Eskimo dogs, but as for your 12-year-old dog, I may offer some insight. My dog is 13 and has been an "only dog" all her life. Occasionally we have had other dogs temporarily--puppy sitting for vacationing friends, etc.-- for up to 2 weeks at a time. No matter how good natured the other dog was, Minka was always extremely defensive and acted hurt and neglected. She was probably very jealous and upset that the other dog got attention too. She's not used to sharing our affections with other animals. But--every dog is different. Yours may adapt more easily to a new puppy in the house, and may even be willing to show it the ropes. We've decided to humor Minka and not get another dog until she's "no longer with us", which may be a while since she's still real spunky and healthy. Marie-Louise Jalbert
