We are considering getting an American Eskimo puppy. Does anyone know the traits of these dogs. Are they high strung, good guard dogs, devoted, protective, etc? Also we have a 12 year old spitz-beagle. How will he take to a new dog in the house. Please post all comments to the net as others may be interested. Thanks in advance. dan philen akgua!dlp

I would be concerned about your present dog taking to a new one in the house. We once had a 7 year old cocker spaniel who was getting old, and my parents made the mistake of getting another one to prevent a gap so us kids wouldn't be quite so heartbroken as the last time. Let me tell you, Freckles may've been old and in degrading health, but boy, could he fight! He and Amber would fight at any chance he could get, dispite us lavishing affection equally. I once made the mistake of trying to separate them without the assistance of a water hose, and came out with a bloodied hand (although some of the blood was theirs, *most* of it was mine!). And after dear Freckles died, Amber became a fighting dog (read remained), challenging any dog that happened along when we were walking him (on a leash) or had him ties up out front. If your beagle is allowed indoors, I recommend you keep him inside most of the time and keep them separate, don't let the oldster see you being affectionate with the other, and give him lots of love for his remaining years. kitten~ scgvaxd!pertec!kitten
