Another note about cat scratching posts: In addition to the post being tall, be sure it's heavy and stable enough so it doesn't slide around or tip when the cat scratches it. Otherwise the cat will be frightened of it and not use it.

I discovered an excellent cat scrathing post by accident -- a big piece of driftwood, about 5 feet long and 3 inches diameter, which I had stored in my basement, was eargerly adopted by my cats as a scratching post. It's slightly curved, and just lies on the floor. They perch on it and scratch, rather than reaching up -- seems to have the right texture for them. I was going to use the driftwood as decoration, but I'd rather have driftwood splinters in the basement than couch splinters in the living room... --Chris Robertson
