[net.pets] Leghold Traps

jho@ihuxn.UUCP (Yosi Hoshen) (11/12/84)

My daughter who is active in the animal welfare campaign has requested
me to post the following:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The steel-jaw leghold trap, aptly named, the primary tool with which
wild animals are caught for their pelts, causes such pain to its victims
that it is compared to crucifixion. Its victims' only chance for escape,
after days of exposure to the elements, hunger ant thirst, often gnaw off
their prisoned leg. So they die from gangrene.
However, seven out of every ten victims are non-target animals,"trash"
to the trapper, often pets.
The Fund For Animals is dedicated to ending the atrocity, to pass the
bill H.R.1797 which would ban the trap across the fifty states.

The following is a request from The Fund's Michigan office:

We are vitally interested in collecting evidence of trap injured and/or
fatally wounded pets, wild animals, and birds. Every authenticated case
of a trap injured or killed animal or bird will help to promote legislation
to control trapping. We would appreciate your assistance in gathering this
information!
