The symptoms vary. If in any doubt, swoop down on your cat and take it to the vet immediately. In my cat's case, he went from being apparently healthy to being so sick he had to be euthanized in six days. Tumors associated with leukemia can grow at an incredible rate. I gather that more usually it is a long drawn out thing, and the cat starts to seem generally run down, more susceptible to infections, and so forth as a first indication. In the case of my cat, it was SEVERE lack of appetite and no desire for activity of any sort. The disease progressed quite rapidly ( < 1wk / 9lives). A blood test confirmed the disease. In the case of my mom's kitten, she had real bad diarrhea (which wasn't helped by the fact that she is pure white) and a slight problem with her appetite. The disease was transferred to her other cat within one week of discovering it. The same symptoms were evident in the other cat. After taking medications for 3 months the disease went into remission for both cats. I'm not sure what the medication was called but it was the same as the one the my grandmother takes for leukema only in lower doses. U.C. Davis has a clinic where they are researching this deadly disease. Michael Lee NASA Ames Research Center
