[net.pets] cat litter

I keep a couple of heavy aluminum foil baking pans
(disposable kind with smooth bottom) filled half
full with "Litter Green" brand filler in the
bathroom beside the toilet; I then use a large
serving spoon (kept just for this use), the kind
with the perforated bottom, and an empty two-
quart cardboard milk carton with the top opened
wide. Once a day, I use they spoon to transfer
clumps of soggy littergreen (it's very absorbent)
plus other items from the litter tray to the milk
carton, then into the toilet; using the carton is
handier than transfering each spoonful into the
head; fresh litter green is added as necessary.
Scrape the bottom of the tray so that wet litter
does not remain in contact with it (it will eventually
corrode through if it does). This operation takes
a minute or two and eliminates most odor problems.
Be sure to use the smooth bottomed trays, not the kinds
with irregular surfaces (hard to clean).
I have tried several brands of litter, and litter green
is the best in terms of odor control, and also is less
likely to be tracked all over the house. The foil
trays can be discarded if they get too rasty.
This system works well for my three ferrets; unlike
cats, a ferret will not bury its waste, so the surface
of the litter must be tended more frequently, else
slinky is liable to step in it.
