[net.pets] kitten eats rug - HELP!

pallas@Shasta.ARPA (02/18/85)

Our seven month old Siamese has chewed a second hole in the carpet (the
first time was several months ago). Can anyone tell me why she is
doing this and/or how to keep it from happening again? We love her
very much, but we may not be able to keep her if we have to (1) pay for
repairs to the carpet every two months, or (2) pay to have the whole
carpet replaced when we move out of the apartment. Thanks.

You might try:

1) Get a steel floor, and watch the cat try to eat that.

2) Wire the cat's mouth shut. This would also prevent
it from meowing in the middle of the night, as well
as cut back on your food bill.

3) Cut off the cat's legs, and put it in a safe place.
To make life simple, place it in a litter box. (For
kindness' sake, clean the box monthly -- unless you
   forget.)

[No flames, please! I actually love cats; I just couldn't
resist answering your question!]

Seriously:

The best approach is probably strong discipline. Whenever
you notice the kitten chewing the rug, smack it on the mouth
and let it know you are pissed off. This should only be done
if you have caught the cat in the act; otherwise it won't know
what it is being punished for.

Also, if your cat seems to have a favorite area, try spraying
that area with any of the commerical "cat-away" products.

Good luck.

Joe-

My brother's Siamese cat used to eat the Persian rug, towels, wool sweaters,
socks. You name it--he ate it. The solution was to start feeding him
Brewer's Yeast!!! He then became addicted to the Brewer's Yeast
and craved that for years, but he stopped eating the rug. Everything
else they were able to put away out of his reach (makes you a really
neat housekeeper!!) I've heard various reasons for this need--
I think there was something about needing the lanolin that is in wool.
But I don't really know why...I just know what worked for them.

Good Luck

While it is good to spank a dog, I just can't see doing that to
a cat. Use a bucket of water, but don't spank a kitten.
