[net.pets] pet allergies

An interesting thing to note is that while what most people are allergic to
in dogs is dander, in cats the allergen is their saliva. (And, it follows,
that since cats lick their fur, the saliva gets all over the fur and causes
problems when the cats shed.)

I've heard of some stuff you can feed your cat to make it more hypoallergenic.
Haven't tried it, though in my experience long-haired cats are more likely
to cause trouble than short hairs. Also, for some reason, black cats seem
to cause my allergic friends the least trouble.

I do know it's possible to build up a tolerance to one specific animal, have
no trouble with that one, but still have attacks around others.
