Many years ago when my family lived in Savannah we had gopher tortoises in our yard. They live in burrows that they dig down under the flower beds, and come out to graze on the lawn. They were very docile and would eat lettuce out of your hand. They will wander off, though, and will come to grief if not kept in the yard. One of ours got out of the yard and was run over by a car. They can dig under fences, so If I were going to have them, I would bury a cinder block barrier for a couple of feet below the bottom of the yard fence to keep them in. The ones we had were about a foot in diameter.
