[net.pets] golden retrievers as pets?

My wife and I are interested in getting a dog, now that we have
a yard for one. We are currently thinking about a golden
retriever or golden retriever mix. Would anyone out there like
to volunteer any information about

	1) their intelligence
	2) how much they drool
	3) how much they chew or dig
	4) their barking habits
	5) how they are with children
	6) other questions you may think relevant.

I would especially like to hear from people with first-hand experience
and would appreciate descriptive ancedotes from anyone who wants
to provide them.

If you don't want to get involved in a discussion on the net
(say if you think all these animals should be taken out and shot,
or if you think all other breeds should be, or if this discussion
just died down last month) just send me mail at the address below.

Please ignore the two messages I sent prior to this. I am not used
to posting to the net, and boy did I mess up!
Anyway, my Husband and I currently have an 8 month old golden retriever
pup. When we were living in our apartment, she was very good. She was
paper trained in two days, she never barked, she didn't chew up the
furniture, she was GREAT! Now that we are living with my parents, (until
we can move into our own house), we have to keep here in the laundrey
room because my parents have a HUGE german shepherd. Actually, the two
get along quite well, but they play too rough to leave them in the house
alone together.
As far as intelligence goes, she has plenty of it. She is a fast learner,
easy to train, and alot of fun. She doesn't drool alot, except after she
takes a drink of water. (She's alittle sloppy in that area! No manners!)
She chewed a little bit in the begining, as most puppies do, but she did
no serious damage.
As I said before, she doesn't bark much at all. The only time she barks is
when my parents dog barks. She actually sits and waits to see what the other
dog will do, and then she imitates her. It's so cute! She never really knows
WHY she is barking, but she figures if Penny does it, it must be right!
She is also great with children. The worse she'll do to them is lick them
all over their faces until someone says for her to stop.
All in all, Golden Retrievers are a very mellow breed. They have wonderful
dispositions, and everyone who meets Galadriel comments on how friendly
she is.
I highly recommend them as pets!

I have had Goldens for over seven years now and I am convinced
that they drool less than a child of equal age. Mine will let a burgler
take anything except the food.
I wouldn't trade them for a wife of equal age!
