I have a one year old pit bull, he has a bad habit of climbing. He can climb like a mountain goat! On tables, counter tops, sinks, furniture, he can even climb the sea wall in M. Beach! The question is can I stop him from climbing in my apartment? I'm tired of seeing little paw print on my kitchen table (he steps in ash trays). Any explaination for this behavior, or suggestions will help. Thanks in advance.

Bravo to Mr. Cushners pitbull posting! This was an accurate and truthfull account. As a pitbull owner I can honestly say that proper socialization and training will make the animal a wonderfull pet. Our pitbull is best friends with the neighborhood kids, who have become a nuisance to us because they constantly come to our door asking if the dog can come out to play. Of course when he does go, he is always supervised. When the kids wrestle with him it is interesting to notice how gentle he is -especially with small children. The dog has grown up with these kids, and we have carefully socialized him. This is what has made the difference. We chose the breed for its unsurpassed loyalty, and the dog does everything with us. He is truly the most loyal, obediant, affectionate, and well behaved dog we have ever had. He is an excellent watchdog and naturally distrustfull of strangers, however once he has become aquainted is extremely friendly and he is always craving attention and affection. Our best friends always request that we bring him! He is however a ham and becomes somewhat aggrivating with his antics, however amusing they may be. He also loves to play with a large male German Shepherd next door, but again has grown up with this dog. He is not so friendly with other males and we keep him leashed, fearfull of all these stories circulating. As far as people who own these dogs for macho reasons or fighting, they are obviously mentally disturbed. It is sad that these few idiots have given the dog a bad name. With proper and carefull training, this is an excellent breed that is intelligent and loyal. Now that we have had one, we will never own anything else. Care is all that is neccesary for a good dog. As for all the people circulating vicious rumours, I suggest that you blame the owners, not the dog.
