[net.pets] clipping cat claws

scott@hou2g.UUCP (N. Ersha) (07/22/85)

I clip my cats' claws (front only) every 2
or 3 weeks. It definitely helps to "get" them
when they're tired, and (for one of my cats,
at least) sometimes you may only get 3 or 4 of
the claws at a sitting. Be persistent.

However, when you get a new cat (kitten), the
way to condition them is to play with their paws
often, in the normal course of petting them--
pet their feet, push your fingers between their
"fingers" to extend the claws, etc. Once they
get used to this (it isn't too hard, unless the
cat doesn't like to be handled at all), they
are quite amenable to the clipping.

And of course, ALWAYS reward them afterwards
with an edible treat.
