[net.pets] questions about looking for a dog

jeffg@tekcbi.UUCP (Jeff Glover) (07/28/85)

I'm looking for a dog now that I've found my house in the country.
If you have any suggestions or comments would you please send me a
reply?

My choices (so far)
	collie
	german shepherd
	golden retriever
	malmute

My lifestyle includes 8-10 hours away from home each day, 5 days per
week. Weekends can initially be spent with the dog (I would like to
get a puppy), but I would like to leave it alone eventually on weekends
from time to time without the dog becoming frantic (I've noticed
goldens get very nervous about being left alone).

How trainable are each of these breeds? I've been told that the collie
and the shepherd can be very well trained to do many things; more so
than the malmute and the golden. Also, it would have to get along with
the (2) sheep that keep the orchard grass trimmed.

Climate: Pacific Northwest; 30-50s winter, 50-90s summer. Could any
of those dogs not take those variations? I'd like the dog to stay out
(two acres of running room) while I'm at work. Of course food,
shelter and water would be provided.

Anything I've left out? Please, send me some mail.
