Back when I lived in Newark, New Jersey, and the roaches were bigger than the rats, we always used to sprinkle boric acid powder in and behind the cabinets, etc. As far as I know, the boric acid is relatively harmless to pets (it's used as an eye wash) and it is cheap. The roaches would eat the boric acid and it would mutate them to the point where they could not reproduce (ever see a two- headed cockroach?). This always seemed to work for us.
