[net.pets] Alternative scratching posts

mbr@aoa.UUCP (Mark Rosenthal) (08/23/85)

Although our site has been receiving articles for the past few months,
articles posted to the net have not been getting distributed until recently.
The following is a reposting of an article I sent out quite some time ago.
I believe it never made it to the net at large. While I believe it is still
worth posting, the articles in the references line have probably all been
expired by now. Apologies if you have seen this before.

In the past I've had only marginal success with scratching posts
(the rug-covered kind). Since we just got two kittens, we decided
to try a different approach. We left a piece of firewood on the
back porch, hoping to train them to use it instead of the furniture.
Since we have only had them for a few days, we have not had the chance
to actively encourage them to use it. Lo and behold, we don't
need to. They have discovered it all by themselves, and seem to
enjoy it at least as much as anything else around. Of course, we'll
be on the lookout for anything inappropriate that catches their interest,
and try to redirect their attention to the log, but so far, so good.
