[net.pets] Cats and Declawing

crbx@pyuxa.UUCP (C. Rauh) (09/04/85)

My cat was recently declawed.
His personality has become much more low key.
Is this normal or is he just neurotic?
He is a year old and we have had him
for two months.

Thanks for your experiences.

Might be simply a result of the surgery. Until our male cat was
neutered, we couldn't let him in the bedroom to sleep with us as he
would run up and down the covers, jump on our heads, chew on our feet,
etc. After he came home from the vet, we took pity on him and he was much
more subdued.
Let me take this opportunity to make yet another pitch for getting
your pets spayed or neutered. This is so important that I can't believe
people argue that it is cruel and unnatural. Having umpteen kittens is
natural too, but having half of them end up being destroyed at the animal
shelter most definitely isn't. Last year the Montgomery County animal
shelter destroyed 7000 animals that they could not find homes for. This is
a disgrace. One employee mentioned that some parents want one littler of
puppies or kittens so that their kids can see "the miracle of life", etc.
The employee's response was that she's like to have them all come in and
witness the tragedy of death for all those animals not lucky enough to have
good homes.

Hooray for Jody Patilla! It is absolutely vital to have your animal
spayed or neutered. It is not cruel, but a kindness. Here in Denver,
the figure is unfortunately not half that is destroyed at the Denver
Dumb Freinds League (Humane Society), but 70-75% according to their
newsletters.

As for declawing, I would strongly recommend a tight-weave carpet-
covered kitty-condo or scratching post, as my cats who were going for
the stairway carpeting, took right to it. They don't touch the
shag carpet covered one I have.

[O.K., off soapbox]

Thanks.

We are thinking of having her digestive system removed, any experience
on the net with that?

We were going to do this, but the cost was enormous. For awhile, we simply
poked baggies down ahead of the food -- everything came out neatly packaged.

Finally, though, we just had her stuffed...Life's a lot easier now.
