[net.pets] Cats afraid of outdoors

slb@drutx.UUCP (Sue Brezden) (10/05/85)

We had a cat that was scared of the outdoors. He seemed pretty
normal in other ways, although he may have been somewhat warped
by being the only cat in an apartment which was often empty--with
people off to work and school and so on. (Given my choice, I would
always raise 2 kittens at minimum. I think they grow up to be much
more normal.)

We tried to get him outside, but he would just belly down to the ground
and cry until someone came along and opened the door. We tried a
leash, which he REALLY hated. He would lay on his side as he was
dragged along. Looked pathetic or funny depending on your mood.

He did change however. We moved 500 miles and got him declawed within
the same two weeks. It must have been the shock. He suddenly developed
a great love of the outdoors at our new home. Or maybe he just liked
the Colorado outdoors better than Nebraska outdoors. He also began
to be quite nice to several members of the family that he couldn't
stand before. Very strange.

I don't know whether to recommend that method. Seems rather drastic.
