[net.pets] A Flea Comb

plw@mgwess.UUCP (Pete Wilson) (11/10/85)

I just bought a flea comb for my cats. It is made for Lambert
Kay (Div. of Carter-Wallace, Cranbury, N.J., 08512) by Twinco as their
item number 71113. There are several grooming combs made by Twinco, but
this is the one for flea control. It is a sturdy metal comb with no
more than 2 mm between the teeth (probably not more than 1 mm!).
I kept a pan of real hot water handy and cleaned the comb in
that when I did the crittens. Fleas can swim and hold their breath for
long periods, but the heat of the water did 'em in. I then dusted the
cats with flea powder after I got most of the fleas off. There is no
way to get all the fleas, because the little buggers are fast and can
find lots of places to hide in the fur.
I've tried flea shampoos, but the problem with those is the
pests abandon ship and hide in the carpeting, the furniture, and
anyplace else they can find, until the effect of the shampoo wears off
(about a week) and then jump back on the animal (and they are HUNGRY!).
If your pet has fleas, count on doing some sort of treatment on
a weekly basis for a couple of months. Fleas lay lots of eggs and they
have about a 10 day gestation period. Treat your pet with powder,
shampoo, or whatever, vacuum all carpeting, furniture, and spray or
dust with powder wherever your pet sleeps about once a week or you, and
your pet, will have fleas for quite awhile.
