Being a very big fan of Jimi Hendrix, I feel like I should give my two-cents worth in the Jimi Hendrix-Prince comparisons. The only similarity I can see in them is in the style of dress. Sure Prince is popular, he even has a good ability to get a crowd going on stage. But then again, so does Bruce Springsteen and many others. Jimi was an innovator in his time both with his music and his stage antics. One of the things that first got Jimi discovered was that Paul McCartney told a friend of his about seeing this guy in Europe who played the guitar with his teeth. Did anyone else do that back then ? And Jimi also had an interesting variety of musical styles. His favorite was the style of blues that you can hear from B.B. King. I have seen albums for sale for $4 of old Hendrix stuff (before The Experience) that give good evidence of it. Then there is Jimi's screaming guitar sounds such as those in "Crosstown Traffic" and "Purple Haze". The other style is one that deserves more credit that people give it. Jimi played wonderful "soft" stuff. Has anybody ever heard "Little Wing" ? Many people consider it a musical masterpiece because of the chord progressions. Listen to the album "Axis Bold As Love" and you will see. Now just what does Prince have that makes him like Jimi ? Sure, he plays alot of different instruments, but Jimi didn't.
